Diary Notes
Wednesday 28 April cloudy (UK)/ fine / breezy (Denmark), 13°C
· Up @ 4:15, caught cab @ 4:45 to airport, checked in etc, then had coffee
· Through customs etc then onto plane @ 6:40, left @ 6:55
· Took off, flew over Denmark and landed in Copenhagen @ 9:30 local time
· Pilot pulled up plane quickly and parked next to fire station, there had been a warning light of a fire in the hold. False alarm.
· Disembarked onto grass next to runway, then bused to terminal
· Waited in room then told to go through to baggage claim. No bags
· Told to fill in report and bags would be sent to our hotel once they had been cleared through by fire inspectors
· Changed money (£90 = 965DKK) then caught train to central station (Kobenhavn H) (25.50DKK ea)
· Walked to hotel (1 block from station) and checked in @ 11:20
· Dropped of hand luggage in room and then out
· Walked past station and Tivoli to info centre then on to Stroget (main shopping street), walked along steet, stopped to look @ Hojbro Plads, Christiansborg Palace and Borge building then along Stroget to Kongens Nytorv
· Walked to end of Nyhavn, had sausage (polse) for lunch from street vender then an ice-cream @ 1:00
· Bought tickets for canal cruise (50DKK each for 50 minutes), cruise started @ 1:30
· Went past Holmenen, Little Mermaid, Christianhavn and Slotsholmen, then back to Nyhavn
· Walked along Nyhavn then through to Amalienborg Palace (Royal Residence), then through to Frederikskirken
· Back to Amalienplads then along to Kastelet then to Little Mermaid for photos
· Walked to Oststation, picked up tickets for David Byrne concert (arranged by Liz for AC’s birthday) (590 DKK for 2)
· Drew 1000DKK in cash
· Caught train back to Kobenhavn H station @ 3:50, back to hotel
· Relaxed and had a short sleep
· Out @ 7:00, walked around hotel district then had tea @ Bistro Restaurant @ Kobenhavn H station (Wienerschnitzel for Liz, Plaice for AC 400 DKK), back to hotel @ 9:30
Thursday 29 April fine / breezy, 12°C
· Up @ 8:30, had breakfast in hotel, left @ 9:00
· Walked west along Vesterbrogade then north to look at lakes, walked to Vestport station and bought 10 trip travel ticket (145DKK for buses, trains etc)
· Walked past Palace building (painted bright colours) then to Stroget
· Drew 1000DKK out
· Walked along to Hojbro plads, then walked to Christiansborg Slot, walked through centre of complex then out over the old marble bridge
· Walked back around to Hojbro plads then carried on along Stroget
· Had a coffee and wienerbrod (Danish) in café (68DKK) then walked to Amalianborg Slotsplads @ 11:30 to watch changing of the guard @ 12:00
· Also saw Colin Powell (US secretary of state?) arrive with police etc
· Walked to bus stop on Store Kongensgade and caught bus back to Tivoli
· Walked back to Stroget and Liz bought leather handbag (299DKK (£25))
· Had lunch in pub (2 burgers and drinks 160DKK) @ 1:30
· Walked back to hotel to unload stuff
· Walked to Tivoli and went in @ 2:30 (65DKK each for entry into gardens)
· Walked around and went on a rollercoaster (90DKK for 2), saw Colin Powell again in gardens
· Left about 4:30, got stamp for free re-entry
· Caught train to Norreport and walked past botanical gardens then past Rosenborg Slot
· Caught metro back to Kongens Nytorv and then bus back to Kobenhavn H station, walked back to hotel @ 5:00
· AC had a sleep
· Out @ 7:30 to Tivoli, had tea @ café (Wienerschnitzel and roast beef 200DKK) then walked around gardens
· Back to hotel @ 9:30
Friday 30 April fine / breezy, 15°C
· Up @ 8:30, had breakfast then checked out @ 9:15, left bags in storage room
· Caught bus 6a to Copenhagen Zoo, 65DKK ea
· Walked around zoo, saw Kea then bus back to Tivoli area, had lunch @ Mcdonalds
· Walked back to hotel @ 12:15, picked up bags then to Kobenhavn H station, caught train to airport @ 12:40, then no 12 bus to Park Inn hotel
· Checked in @ 1:15 then to our room
· Picked up @ 3:00 by Alamo cars and taken to depot nearby, picked up rental car (Opel Meriva)
· Drove past airport to Dragor
· Walked around pretty little village, bought icecream, drew another 1000DKK, and bought drinks and biscuits
· Drove around to the airport and watched planes then under runway and back north then east to the coast then back to hotel
· Out for tea @ 7:00, drove to area near Amagerbro, found Domino’s pizza place
· Got pizza and garlic bread (120DKK) then drove east to Oresund coast and ate tea and watch kite surfers
· Drove around area near hotel then back to hotel @ 8:30
Saturday 1 May fine / hazy cloud, 17°C
· Up @ 8:00, had breakfast then on the road @ 9:00
· Drove south from hotel to E20 by the airport then followed E20 west, crossed bridge to Funen (250DKK toll one way or 400DKK for day return, £20 one way!!!)
· Turned off E20 @ junction 46 then southwest across rolling farming country to Kvaernrup then to Egeskov Slot (Castle), arr 11:00
· Walked around grounds, went up tree top walk, looked at classic car and motocycle museum, walked through park areas
· Had lunch @ 12:30 at café in grounds (15DKK) then back to car and headed north towards Odense
· Stopped @ shopping mall for look around then back on the road @ 2:45 and onto the E20 back to Copenhagen, arr 4:15
· Relaxed in our room then went for a swim in the hotel pool
· Out @ 6:00, caught bus to town (no 12) arr 6:25
· Drew 1000DKK
· Had tea @ Pizza restaurant near railway station (16DKK)
· Walked to Vega Musik venue to see David Byrne @ 8:00 (birthday present for AC from Liz)
· Very good concert, mixture of old Talking Heads stuff and new stuff, finished @ 10:30
· Walked back to Radhusenplads (Townhall) and caught bus @ 11:00 back to hotel
Sunday 2 May fine, 21°C
· Up @ 8:00, had breakfast then left @ 9:00
· Drove into town then north on the 152 to Helsingor, arr @ 10:30
· Parked car in town, walked around then drove to the harbour and parked
· Walked around Kronborg Slot, looked over to Sweden then went into Slot
· Looked around courtyard then walked back past the harbour the the car
· Drove north along the coast to Hornbaek, arr 11:45
· Parked the car at the marina, bought toasted sandwiches and fries @ hotdog stand
· Ate lunch in the sun, then bought icecreams
· Drove south on 235 then west on 205 then south again on 227 to Hillerod. Very pleasant drive through forests
· Filled car with petrol (8DKK / litre)
· Drove to Frederiksborg Slot, parked car and walked around castle
· Back to the car @ 2:00, drove to 16 the south to Copenhagen, then back to hotel on O2 and E20
· Caught 2a bus to airport and caught train to Malmo, Sweden (280DKK return for 2), left airport @ 3:15, arr 3:40
· Drew 500SKK (12DKK=10SKK=£1)
· Bought doll for Luti (80SKK) and shirt for AC (130SKK)
· Walked through town, through squares
· Had coffee in the sun next to canal
· Walked to Kungsparken and sat on the grass and relaxed @ 4:30
· Walked back to station @ 6:00 and caught train back to Copenhagen central station, arr 6:30
· Changed money back to DKK
· Had tea @ pizza place next to station (154DKK)
· Walked to Radhusplads and caught bus @ 8:00 back to hotel
Monday 3 May mist / fog (Copenhagen) fine / breezy (Edinburgh), 13°C
· Up @ 6:45, had breakfast etc then checked out
· Drove car to airport, parked and left keys inside
· Checked in and went through security
· Waited in lounge, plane delayed from 10:15 departure to 11:20
· Got call to gate C18 so went there, @ 11:00 this changed to A11 (the other end of the airport) so legged it through the terminal
· Took off on time, flew up through mist from ground up to 30,000ft
· Bit of a bumpy flight, landed @ 12:15 (UK time)
· Through immigration etc and picked up bags, caught bus to town then bus home, arr 1:45
· Unpacked and relaxed
