Act III – Scene II - Living in London

 

Notes:

1.      The diary from this point on is mainly in the form of bullet points, except where full descriptions are warranted.

2.      The notes now relate to what I (Andrew) have done each day.

3.      With regard to the descriptions of the weather, if two types of weather are listed (eg fine / raining) then it did both, in the order listed.

  

Saturday 19 May , °C

 

·        Up @ 8:30am

·        Walked to Shad Thames to letting agents for our new flat (Hastings International) @10:00. Agent not there yet so went and sat by the Thames.

·        Back to letting agent, dropped of copy of my passport

·        Walked to new flat for another look then walked to London Bridge station (16 minutes from flat),  tube to Camden Town to the markets.

·        Bought a work satchel (fabric, £10), walked along the canal a bit till the strap broke on the new satchel, took satchel back and got a new strap.

·        Had lunch on Camden High Street, then took a canal cruise along the Regents Canal (Grand Union Canal) from Camden Locks, past the London Zoo / Regents Park to Little Venice in aida Vale (£4.20ea)

·        Walked to Paddington Station for some afternoon tea then tube to Oxford Street. Walked along Oxford Street to Tottenham Court Road to Easyeverything (www.easyeverything.co.uk) to send email.

·        Walked to St Katherines Docks then across Tower Bridge to Bridge Tandoori for tea

·        Back to flat to watch “A Clockwork Orange”

  

Sunday 20 May cloudy, 18°C

 

 ·        Up @ 10:00

·        Tube from London Bridge to Brent Cross to the shopping mall. Walked around mall and had lunch. Bought a new pair of headphones (£30)

·        Bus back to Oxford Street, via Abbey Road and past Lord’s Cricket Ground

·        Walked down Carnaby Street and through Soho

·        Tube to St Pauls from Tottenham Court Road

·        Walked to Millenium Bridge (closed) then across Southwark Bridge  and back home along Bankside / Southbank (south side of river)

·        Out to tea @ Pommeller’s Rest (local pub) (£12)

  

Monday 21 May fine, 20°C

  

·        Up @ 6:40am, tube to work, arr 8:00am

·        Left work @ 5:30pm (just another day)

·        Went to Hastings International to see new flat @ 6:15

·        Back home for tea

·        Walked up through China Town and Soho, through Soho Sq to Tottenham Court Rd

Thursday 24 May fine, 20°C

  

·        Up @ 6:30, tube to work, arr 7:45am

·        Got a bank cheque from HSBC for £1926.41 @ lunch time, which is the balance owing for taking flat (1 month rent in advance ( £800) + 6 weeks rent as bond (£1110) + fees (chattel list etc) – deposit (£180))

·        Left work @ 5:30pm, tube to Oxford Street, picked up replaced Vodaphone mobile phone (previous one unrepairable)

·        Walked to Gt Newport St, met Liz and went to Saint Bar for FSS Recruiting party @ 6:30

·        Left @ 7:15 and into China Town for tea (£23)

·        Walked to Charing Cross, train to London Bridge, home @ 9:15

  

Friday 25 May fine (again), 22°C

  

·        Up @ 6:30, tube to work, arr 7:45am

·        Left @ 5:30pm, tube home

·        Kylie and John in Brussels for the weekend

·        Tube to Tottenham Court Road, walked along Oxford Street, and through Soho

·        Tea @ Adam’s Ribs on Shaftesbury Ave

·        Walked to Charing Cross, train to London Bridge, home @9:30

·        Watched slides with Tammy (Kylie’s sister) and her friends Glen and Grant. Slides were from Glen and Grants trip through South America

·        Had a car crash at the end of Tanner Street, which we assisted in the reporting of and cleaning up of. One of the cars involved took off (not the one at fault), and there was some blood from one of the occupants of the other car.

·        Bed @ 2:00am

  

Saturday 26 May hazy, 20°C – Flat Shifting Day

  

·        Up @ 8:30am

·        Walked to Mill St, dropped off dry-cleaning, then to Hastings International to pick up keys etc for flat. Signed rental forms, paid money

·        Walked to flat @ 11:00, met another agent for inspection and checking of chattel list and met John Battye, the landlord

·        Back to Kylie and John’s, finished packing

·        Got a cab to Wolseley Street (too many bags to carry!)

·        Unloaded bags then caught bus to Surrey Quays shopping mall, did our first shop (£50) then caught a Blackcab back to flat (£6)

·        Unloaded then tube to New Cross, walked to Carphone Warehouse looking for new phone, none in stock

·        Back to Surrey Quays

·        Bought TV (Matsui 21”, £109) and stereo (Phillips Micro system, £87) @ Currys then minicab home (£3.50)

·        Got organised, tube out to Bond Street, bought cables etc for TV and stereo

·        McDonalds for tea then tube home @ 9:30pm

·        REST

  

Sunday 27 May cloudy, 18°C

  

·        Up @ 8:30

·        No hot water so called the landlord

·        He came round and couldn’t see a problem, so called gas company, man to come round tomorrow (bank holiday)

·        Also the washing machine door jambed shut and couldn’t be opened, so had to call a washing machine repair man as well for Monday

·        Left @ 11:00, tube to Camden Town

·        Went to Carphone Warehouse, got Ericsson 380 phone (£99 – trade in (£50) + £50 deposit (for being from overseas)

·        Connected through BTCellnet, £25/month includes 200 hundred free minutes

·        Lunch @ Pret a Manger

·        Tube to Sloane Square and walked past the Chelsea Hospital (Chelsea Flower Show was being packed up)

·        Walked down to the river then along the embankment and back to Sloane Sq

·        Tube to Old Street to “Argos” (catalogue shop) and bought a clothes airer/rack (£17)

·        Back home @ 4:00

·        Out for a walk to the local shop then to the “Ship Aground” pub across the road from home

·        Home @ 6:00pm

·        Out @ 7:15 to The Pommellers Rest pub for tea (£12)

·        Home @ 8:30pm

  

Monday 28 May(Bank Holiday) partly cloudy, 20°C

  

·        Up @ 10:00

·        Waited for the gas man to come, arrived @ 11:30 and fixed hot water (just needed to know which switches to flick)

·        Washing machine people didn’t turn up  and @ 2:30 we decided they weren’t coming , rang another company and they would come between 5-7pm today

·        Caught a bus to Surrey Quay for lunch and shopping @ Tescos

·        AC bought a business shirt at Bhs (£14)

·        Tube to Bermondsey and home

·        Had tea

·        Repair man arrived @ 9:00, fixed the door to the washing machine

  

Tuesday 29 May fine, 22°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20am

·        Tube from London Bridge to Kentish Town to work, arr 7:45am

·        Dropped in Visa card applications and change of address forms to HSBC @ lunch

·        Left work @ 5:30

·        Tube to London Bridge then walked

·        Picked up drycleaning (£4.65 for trousers) and home @ 6:40

·        Out @7:00

·        Tube to Wapping, walked along Wapping High St to St Katherines Docks for tea @ Thistle Tower Hotel in café (£20)

·        Walked home over Tower Bridge @10:00

  

Wednesday 30 May fine, 20°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20

·        Tube to work, walked from Camden Town stop, arr 7:45

·        Left @ 5:30, home @ 6:30 after picking up cleaning from drycleaners (3 shirts washed and ironed - £10)

·        Had tea then out @ 7:45, caught 188 bus to Elephant and Castle, then tube to Charing Cross to send emails @ easyeverything

·        Home by train to London Bridge and walking, @ 9:30

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to Kings Cross Station then bus to work, arr 7:45

·        Left @ 5:30, tube home, arr 6:20pm

·        Had tea and a quiet night in

·        Had Chinese for lunch (Guiseppes shout)

·        Train to Cannon Street Station

·        Bus to Haymarket for tea @ Planet Hollywood

·        Went to easyeverything to send emails then train from Charing Cross to London Bridge and then home

  

Saturday 2 June drizzle clearing, 15°C

  

·        Up @ 9:00am

·        Bus to Surrey Quays for shopping @ Tesco’s

·        Bought cushions (£3 ea) and laundry hamper (£6) from rug shop

·        Bus home

·        Bus to Waterloo Station and had lunch in a café in the station

·        Tube to Charing Cross

·        Bought camera from Jessops (Minolta Dynax 404si, with 28-80 lens, £250) and UV filter (£12)

·        Walked to Haymarket and went to New Zealand Shop under NZ House. Bought things for Kylie and John as a thank you for putting us up (rashuns, pineapple lumps, chocolate etc)

·        Tube to Bank Station then on the DLR (docklands light railway) to Lewisham

·        Went to Argos and bought bedside cabinet (£10) and chest of 4 drawers (£30)

·        Taxi home @ 4:00pm (£12)

·        Built cabinet and chest of drawers

·        Out to town  (bus to Waterloo, tube to Leicester Sq) for tea in China Town  (£24)

·        Walked around Soho, coffee on the footpath

·        Walked to Charing Cross, train to London Bridge , bus home

  

Sunday 3 June fine, 17°C

  

·        Up @ 8:00

·        Bus to London Bridge, then caught a train 9:10am to Brighton (£12 each return), arr 10:30

·        Walked from the train station to the beach then along the board walk to Brighton Pier. Walked out along pier, played the fun machines, watched people on the rides then had a hot dog for lunch.

·        Back along the pier to the beach and jumped a sightseeing bus (£6.50 ea)  for ride around town then out to the Brighton Marina, where we got off had a look around for 1 hr.

·        Back on the bus and back to town, got off at the Royal Pavilion and had a look around the gardens, got an ice cream then walked through “The Lanes”, which is an area of antique shops and narrow streets.

·        Walked back up to the station and caught the 3:46 train back to London Bridge.

·        Had tea @ Garfunkels @ London Bridge Station (£18) then walked home

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to Kings Cross, bus to work, arr 7:45am

·        Left @ 5:30, tube home, arr 6:20

·        After tea walked to Surrey Quays to do grocery shopping, bus home

·        Paid the TV license @ lunchtime

·        Left work @ 5:15, tube to Tottenham Court Rd

·        Liz out for tea with her work mates

·        Bought remote control and polarizing filter for camera @ Jessops (£30 + £30)

·        Hot dog for tea in Oxford Street

·        Walked to Charing Cross

·        Train to London Bridge then bus home

·        Out @ 10:00 to take photos of Tower Bridge etc

·        Bought tickets to “Art” (comedy play based around a white painting, with George Segal, £18 ea)

·        Pizza for tea in Leicester Sq (£15)

·        Went to the show @ 8:15 @ Wyndham Theatre

·        Very good show

·        Tube home @ 10:30

  

Saturday 9 June cloudy, 18°C

  

·        Up @ 10:00

·        Walked to Tooley Street, after dropping off drycleaning, and had breakfast @ café

·        Walked to Borough Markets, then tube to Camden Town to markets

·        Liz bought a leather handbag (£20) and I bought a top (Nepalese, £15). Bought an incense burner for John C for his birthday (£15)

·        Walked to Kentish Town, bought 2 African Violets from a florist (£2 ea)

·        Tube to London Bridge then bus home

·        Dropped off shopping then walked to Surrey Quays, went to Decathlon store looking @ bikes.

·        Caught a bus to Limehouse (north of the river) to garden centre and found nothing of interest

·        Caught the DLR to Bank then bus to London Bridge, then bus to Old Kent Road

·        Went to Halfords looking at bikes, then to B & Q and bought house plants (3 for £198)

·        Bus back home @ 5:30

·        Tube to Stratford @ 6:30, train to Hackney Central

·        Bought 2 tickets to see Shihad @ “The Ocean” (£12 ea) (NB originally tickets ordered via internet but didn’t arrive in time)

·        Tea @ KFC then to concert @ 8:30pm

·        Shihad on @ 9:30 to 11:00, very good show as normal

·        Left @ 11:00, bus to Liverpool Street then another bus home, arr 11:45

  

Sunday 10 June fine / pouring with rain, 18°C

  

·        Up @ 9:30

·        Breakfast @ McDonalds

·        Train to Greenwich

·        Walked down High Street past the markets, then up to park entrance and walked up to Observatory

·        Walked down to the Naval Museum and along to High Bridge (where the company I work for was looking @ another proposal)

·        Walked along river front to Greenwich Pier and had a hot chocolate @ Starbucks

·        Caught DLR to Canary Wharf then tube home, arr 3:00

·        Out to Leisure Centre at Surrey Quays for Liz to have a swim @ 4:15 and home @ 5:30

·        Tea at The Pommellers Rest (J D Weatherspoons) (£12)

  

Monday 11 June fine, 18°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to Kings Cross, bus to work, arr 7:40am

·        Went to the HSBC @ lunch time, visa cards that we ordered were sent to NZ, reordered them

·        Left work @ 5:45, tube to Bank

·        Met Jason Woolley (ex Phillips Fox) for a drink near Monument station. Liz had interview @ Northern Trust and met us @ 6:45

·        Left pub @ 7:30, tube to Embankment, went to easyeverything to send emails etc

Saturday 16 June cloudy / rain / heavy showers, 18°C

  

·        Up @ 8:00

·        Walked to easyrentacar near London Bridge Station, picked up car, spoke to Mum

·        Picked up drycleaning, dropped off @ home

·        Drove southeast through Deptford onto A2 then to Gravesend, Kent, to Liz’a aunty Wilma & uncle Ray’s place.

·        Had lunch with them & their daughter Lindsey @ Harvester pub (@2:30)

·        Left @ 3:30, drove to Dartford to Greenwich University to pick up computer from Angels (my Spanish workmate). Computer belonged to a friend of hers (Pentium 450, 196Meg RAM, CD writer etc, £300)

·        Drove through Dartford and through Dartford tunnel under the Thames, then to Forestgate to see Liz’s work

·        Drove around on A406 to Kentish Town to pick up stuff from Quaint Services, then drove home (arr 7:30)

·        Unloaded car then dropped car back to easyrentacar @ 8:30

·        Tea @ Pizzaexpress (£14) then home

  

Sunday 17 June cloudy, 16°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20, bus to London Bridge then tube to Bank, then to Earls Court

·        Got on Tracks tour bus for day trip to Stonehenge / Salisbury (£12ea) @ 8:30, left @ 8:45

·        Headed west past Heathrow, then on M25, M3, A303 to Stonehenge @ 10:30

·        Walked around with recorded self tour then back to bus @ 12:00, after a quick hot chocolate & scone

·        Up @ 9:00

·        Tube to Green Park, walked to Buckingham Palace, watched the changing of the guard

·        Walked down to Kensington Gardens past Ambassadors residences, then past Kensington Palace

·        Sat in Hyde Park and had an ice cream, then through Hyde Park to café at the end of the Serpentine for coffee

·        Tube from Hyde Park Corner to Piccadilly, walked to ½ rice ticket shop and bought tickets for Starlight Express (£36 for 2)

·        Tube home

·        Out @ 6:30 to Piccadilly, had tea @ McDonalds

·        Went to Apollo Theatre in Shaftesbury Ave, only to find that we needed the Apollo Victoria Theatre, near Victoria Station, 15 minutes before showtime

·         Rushed by tube to Victoria Station, arr @ theatre right on time

·        Watched the show, very well done

·        Tube home @ 11:00

  

Sunday 24 June fine, 27°C

  

·        Up @ 9:00

·        Tube to Canary Wharf, went to Decathlon store looking @ bikes

·        Bus to Halfords in Old Kent Road, no bikes that we wanted so back to Decathlon

·        Lunch @ Decathlon

·        Bought 2 bikes (Liz’s £109, AC’s £129) and assorted gear (helmets, locks etc) total £296

·        Rode home along river

·        Out @ 4:30, rode to pool for swim, then to Arbuckles for tea @ 5:30

·        Rode home @ 7:00

·        Up @ 9:00

·        Left @ 10:00 for a bike ride

·        Dropped off drycleaning, then rode to Royal Mail centre in Southwark to pick up tickets for flight to Edinburgh (£75 ea through Lastminute.com, departing City Airport July 12, returning 16 July)

·        Rode along the Thames path to Greenwich, then past the Millennium Dome to the Thames Barrier

·        Went through the info centre @ the Thames Barrier  (£1 ea) then rode to Woolwich (through a heavy downpour) for lunch @ McDonalds

·        Back to the Thames then across on the (free) Woolwich ferry to North Woolwich

·        Rode west past City Airport and Canary Wharf then through Poplar and Wapping, across Tower Bridge & home (total trip 20 miles)

·        Into town for tea @ TGI Fridays (£22) then walked to Soho for coffee

·        Home @ 10:00

  

Sunday 1 July  mainly fine, 22°C

 

·        Up @ 9:30, walked to London Bridge then tube to Waterloo for brunch

·        Tube to Tower Hill for Tower of London (£11)

·        Had guided tour then walked around the various buildings, saw the crown jewels etc

·        Had lunch in Tower

·        Left @ 3:30, had ice cream @ Thistle Tower Hotel next to Tower Bridge

·        Watched the bridge being raised (first time we’d seen it) and lowered

·        Walked over bridge, then watched it go up, and down, again

·        Walked home

·        Out for tea @ 7:00 to Pizza Express (£20)

  

Monday 2 July mainly fine, 27°C

  

·        Up @  6:20, tube then bus to work, arr 7:45

·        Left work @ 5:30

·        Tube to Green Park, met Liz after her interview @ UBS

·        Walked through Mayfair then tea @ Henry’s on Piccadilly

·        Tube home @ 8:00

·        Went shopping @ Tescos on the internet

  

Tuesday 3 July fine hot, 29°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to work, arr 7:45

·        Left @ 5:30, tube home, arr 6:20

·        Shopping delivered (£5 delivery charge)

·        Out @ 8:00, walked to pool for swim

·        Home @ 9:15

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to work, arr 7:45

·        Left @ 5:30, tube home, arr 6:15

  

Thursday 5 July fine / thunderstorms, 28°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20, tube / bus to work, arr 7:45

·        Left work @ 5:30, train to West Hampstead, tube to Baker Street, met Liz after her interview @ Abbey National

·        Walked through Regents Park then Pizza Express for tea

·        Tube home @ 8:15

·        Got caught in the thunderstorms walking home

  

Friday 6 July fine, 24°C

  

·        Up @ 6:20, tube to work, arr 7:45

·        Left work @ 5:30

·        Home @ 6:30

·        Bus to Surrey Quays, tea @ Quinceys (£20), then to “Shrek” movie (£6 ea)

·        Bus home @ 10:30

  

Saturday 7 July cloudy / rain, 20°C

  

·        Up  @ 9:00

·        Train to Croydon @ 11:05, arrived @ 12:00 ( ½ hr late!)

·        Picked up by Liz’s Aunty June and Uncle Peter, back to their place then Liz’s Aunty Beatrice came over

·        Had lunch and chat

·        Left @ 4:00, train back to London Bridge

·        Out to China Town for tea

  

Sunday 8 July cloudy, 20°C

  

·        Up @ 10:30

·        Tube to Baker Street, brunch @ Café Uno (£12)

·        Thought about going to Madame Tussauds but the queue was too long

·        Walked through Regents Park and went to the Zoo (£10ea)

·        Walked around zoo

·        Left @ 4:30

·        Bus to Baker Street then tube to London Bridge

·        Tea @ the Pommellers Rest then home
