Sunday 26August , cloudy hazy 23°C

· Rode thru Oxford to Canal then up canal to just past Kidlington then past Oxford Airport to Woodstock (10 miles)

· Rode to Blenhiem palace £9.50ea then went in for tour 11.30

· Had lunch @ café by water terraces then walked around the grounds

· Then out of palace to train to butterfly house had icecream then back to palace to get our bikes

· Rode out past lake then thru Woodstock onto cycle route 5 along A44 then onto canal back to Oxford

· Back to B&B for a rest then out for a swim @4.30

· Out for tea in town @ Maxwells (American) £35 then back to bed

· Walked to town to look around (chilly breeze) then to Crown & Castle for tea @8.00

· Had coffee and scone nice town but too touristy

· Drove south to Rollright Stones, near Chipping Norton, looked around stones

· Drove south to Uffington white horse

· Then thru Malborough to Avebury to stone circle very impressive

· Walked around stones had icecream then back to the M4 @6.00

· Drove into traffic jam near Slough so got onto the A4 back into London home @8.00

· Dropped of bags and took car back @8.45 (petrol £45)

Berlin Trip

Friday 28 September cloudy / clearing, 17°C – London to Berlin

Up @ 3:00am! Left @ 3:45 and drove rental car to Heathrow, arr 4:30am. Dropped of car at Alamo / National then caught shuttle bus to Terminal 1. Checked in then through security (signs said no sharp objects, but my Swiss Card in my wallet with knife and scissors didn’t trigger the alarms). Bought a UK to Europe mains adapter plug (£3) then had a quick bite to eat and a coffee and boarded the plane @ 6:45. Took off @ 7:00

Good flight across Holland, landing in Berlin’s Tegel Airport @ 9:40 Eurotime (8:40 London Time). Cleared customs and got our bags. Met Laurie and Jean Webb (our tour guides!) (AC worked with Laurie @ Wellington City Council) then caught bus to Zoogarten Station, then an S Bahn train to Alexanderplatz to the Forum Hotel. Checked in and got a room on 24^th Floor overlooking the city, unpacked then grabbed lunch at an adjoining department store (Kaufhof) (13DM / £4).

After lunch we caught the S Bahn back to Zoogarten, looked in the Wilhelm Memorial Church, which has been left in a partially bombed out state as a reminder of WWII. Then looked in the adjoining octagonal church with its blue stained glass walls.

Caught a doubledecker tour bus (20DM / £6 ea) @ 2:00 for a tour of the sights. The bus took us past the Zoo, various Embassies (not NZ), Potsdamerplatz, Berliner Dom and then had a quick stop at the Brandenburg Gate, which is currently being restored and is “under wraps”. AC bought 2 Berlin t-shirts (25DM / £7 ea), then carried on our tour past the Reichstag (German Parliament) and through the Tiergarten. Got off the bus @ 3:00 then train back to Alexanderplatz. Had a coffee in Laurie and Jeans room then back to our room for a rest.

Went to Kaufhof and AC bought some new Puma trainers (88DM / £30) , back to hotel then out for tea (all the way to the restaurant under the hotel) @ 7:45 for a very nice meal (EC got her Vienna Schnitzel) (40DM / £13). Back to room @ 10:00pm, shattered.

Saturday 29 September fine, 19°C

Up @ 8:00am, down for breakfast @ 8:30, met Laurie & Jean. Caught U bahn to Mohrenstrasse, walked to site of Hitlers Bunker (now a carpark), then to section of the Berlin Wall on Wilhelmstrasse, looked @ Gestapo Exhibition, then walked to Potsdamerplatz. Looked @ another section of wall and no mans land with guard towers.

Caught S bahn to Friedrichstrasse, lunch under the station (30 DM / £10), then walked down Friedrichstrasse to Checkpoint Charlie, went through museum.

Walked to Gendarmarkt (without Laurie & Jean), had a coffee and took photos then to Bebelplatz, then looked around Asia/Pacific festival then past Berliner Dom and walked back hotel past the Rotrathaus (“red townhall”) and Fernsehturm (tower), back @ 5:30

Out again @ 5:45, caught S Bahn to Friedrichstrasse then U bahn to Unter den Linden, and walked to Reichstag. Queued for 1 hour then inside @ 7:15 (free entry), up to roof to look around then up the dome. Very nice view. Back down @ 8:00 then U bahn/S bahn back to hotel, tea @ restaurant under hotel, back to our room @ 10:00

Sunday 30 September cloudy drizzle,17 °C – Berlin to London

Up @ 8:30, breakfast @ hotel with Laurie & Jean. Watched runners in the Berlin Marathon form hotel room. Left @ 9:30, got money (300 DM) then walked down through Nikolei Vertel area then the River Spree. Boarded a river cruise @ 10:45 (30 DM for 2) with only a German commentary. Walked back through Nikolei Vertel, bought snoring bear (50DM) had lunch @ a café opposite the Rotrathaus (potato omlettes, 40DM), then walked back to hotel. Got bags & caught S bahn @ 2:00 to Zoogarten then left Laurie & Jean, caught bus to Tegel airport (arr 3:00) and checked in etc.

Boarded plane @ 4:45, left on time @ 4:55. Raining in Berlin and low cloud. Bumpy flight, arrived @ Heathrow @ 6:00pm (London Time, 7:00 Berlin time). Caught Heathrow express train to Paddington (£12 ea, 15 mins) then tube to Edgeware Road, then to Baker Street then Jubilee Line home, arr 8:00
